At the end of our week at Pothawira, one of my first patients there said to me, "Dr. Emily, what now shall we do without you here to care for us in this way?" That heartbreaking question, for which I had no good answer, burdened me to return to Malawi, bring teams of chiropractors and students, and provide more regular care for the people of Salima and surrrounding regions until a Malawian earns their chiropractic degree and returns to practice full-time in Malawi.
In 2015, I had the opportunity to return to Pothawira twice to provide care for Malawians who wouldn't otherwise have access to chiropractic. This year will bring two more trips to Pothawira. If you're interested in serving at this incredible place, please contact me directly via email.
Some are called to go. Some are called to send. I have been Called To Go.
The Called To Go Journey...
In 2014, I had the privilege of serving on the Jayhawks in Malawi team at Pothawira, in Salima, Malawi. I was the only chiropractor on a team of nurse practitioners and medical students. The purpose of the trip was to bring integrative health care to the patients in Dr. Peter Maseko's clinic, the students at the school, and the mammas and babies in the orphanage. The people in this region of Malawi had never even heard of chiropractic prior to our arrival. In the week we were there, I was able to care for hundreds of people, from birth to 80+ years old. Farmers, bicycle taxi drivers, students, infants, mammas, doctors and nurses alike all received their first adjustments!
